Hemorrhoids in Children

Hemorrhoids in children, while less common than in adults, can still occur. They are swollen veins in the rectum and anus, often causing discomfort and pain. These swollen veins can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (outside the anus).

Several factors can contribute to the development of hemorrhoids in children, including:

• Constipation: Straining during bowel movements can put pressure on the veins in the rectum, leading to swelling.

• Diarrhea: Frequent bouts of diarrhea can also irritate the anus and lead to inflammation.

• Obesity: Excess weight can put additional pressure on the veins in the rectum.

• Family History: A family history of hemorrhoids can increase a child's risk.

While some children may not experience any symptoms, common signs of hemorrhoids in children include:

• Pain during bowel movements

• Blood in the stool

• Itching and irritation around the anus

• Protrusion of a lump near the anus
